A screw conveyor end bearing is a bearing assembly installed at the drive end or tail end of the conveyor. It supports the rotating screw shaft and helps maintain its correct alignment.
The end bearing supports radial loads from the screw assembly and may also control axial or thrust movement generated while conveying material.
End bearings are installed at one or both ends of the screw conveyor casing. One is generally located near the geared motor or drive assembly, and the other is located at the tail end.
It may also be called a terminal bearing, drive-end bearing, tail-end bearing, thrust bearing, flanged bearing, pillow-block bearing or screw conveyor end-shaft bearing.
The drive-end bearing supports the shaft near the geared motor and may be designed to carry thrust loads.
The tail-end bearing supports the opposite end of the screw and generally permits smooth shaft rotation and alignment.
A thrust bearing is designed to control axial movement along the screw shaft. It helps prevent the internal screw assembly from moving lengthwise and contacting the conveyor ends or intermediate bearings.
Radial load acts perpendicular to the shaft centreline. It may be caused by the weight of the screw, material load, motor, gearbox or an overhung chain-drive arrangement.
Axial load acts parallel to the shaft centreline. In a screw conveyor, it is created by the reaction force generated as the rotating screw pushes the bulk material forward.
The thrust-bearing position depends on the conveyor design. In many installations, the drive and thrust-bearing assembly is located near the discharge end so that the screw operates mainly in tension.
Common types include:
Flanged ball bearing
Flanged roller bearing
Pillow-block ball bearing
Pillow-block roller bearing
Tapered roller bearing
Spherical roller bearing
Thrust-bearing assembly
The correct type depends on the radial load, thrust load, shaft size, speed and mounting arrangement.
A flanged bearing is mounted directly to the conveyor end plate or trough end. It provides a compact bearing arrangement and helps support the end shaft.
A pillow-block bearing is mounted on a separate support frame outside the conveyor casing. It is commonly used where additional support, adjustment or drive arrangement is required.
Ball bearings are commonly suitable for moderate radial loads and higher rotational speeds.
Roller bearings generally provide greater load-carrying capacity and may be selected for heavier radial or thrust loads.
The bearing must be selected according to the shaft diameter, screw length, cement load, conveyor inclination, operating speed, gearbox position and expected thrust force.
The bearing is normally positioned outside the material-contact area, but damaged or unsuitable shaft seals can allow cement dust to enter and contaminate it.
The end-shaft seal helps prevent cement or powder from leaking around the rotating shaft and protects the bearing from material contamination.
Common arrangements include:
Gland-packing seal
Plate seal
Lip seal
Air-purged seal
Mechanical seal
Labyrinth-type seal
The correct seal depends on the material, pressure, speed and dust-tightness requirement.
Possible causes include a worn shaft seal, damaged packing, shaft runout, loose end plate, excessive conveyor loading or incorrect seal installation.
Common causes include:
Incorrect bearing selection
Misalignment
Insufficient lubrication
Excessive lubrication
Cement contamination
Excessive thrust load
Bent end shaft
Loose mounting bolts
Overloaded screw conveyor
Damaged shaft seal
Overheating may result from incorrect lubrication, excessive bearing preload, misalignment, contamination, excessive thrust, worn components or an overloaded conveyor.
Possible causes include damaged bearing elements, insufficient lubrication, loose bearing housing, shaft misalignment, contamination or excessive shaft runout.
Yes. A seized or heavily worn bearing increases rotational resistance and can overload the geared motor, causing the protection system to trip.
Yes. Bearing wear, shaft movement or misalignment can allow the internal screw to move away from its proper centreline and contact the casing.
The drive shaft, tail shaft, intermediate bearings, gearbox and conveyor casing should share the correct centreline. Alignment must be checked before final tightening.
Lubrication frequency depends on the bearing type, speed, operating temperature, dust exposure and manufacturers recommendation. Over-lubrication should also be avoided.
Yes. In many designs, the bearing housing, bearing insert, end shaft and seal can be serviced or replaced separately.
Only when its bore size, load capacity, speed rating, sealing arrangement and mounting dimensions satisfy the screw conveyor requirements.
The price depends on bearing type, shaft diameter, bearing capacity, housing design, seal arrangement, material and required quantity.
